VOLUNTEER

How to get involved with Anonymous Village

Volunteering is a crucial aspect of Burning Man because it fosters a sense of community and inclusion among its attendees. Burning Man operates on the Ten Principles, including Communal Effort and Participation. By volunteering, participants not only support the event's operations but also actively engage in creating the greatest city on Earth! Our participation as a camp keeps us in good standing with the bmorg and we ask that everyone volunteers in some way. In the coming months there will be several opportunities to engage in volunteering through AV. Watch this space and join the FB group for signups.

The best way to get connected is by joining us on Zoom at our monthly Business Meeting.  Doing so will give you the opportunity to learn about us and hear about opportunities to get involved.

Every year we have a business meeting at Burning Man on the Saturday of Burn Week. This is where we elect service positions for AV for the coming year.  If you accept a service position, you are expected to join the monthly Zoom for the remainder of the year.

Join a service committee:

Below are the various types of service commitments we have available at The Anonymous Village. Access applications to join our service crews by clicking or tapping on the images to the left:

Placement Crew

Also referred to as "Gracer" (Greeter+Placement), these positions are responsible for the layout of the village on the assigned real estate on the playa in such a way that the needs of the individual villagers are met to the extent possible while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere from the road.

This generally includes ensuring that persons who need RV service can be accommodated, persons leaving early can access the exit roads, generators aren't located next to tents, women who wish to be with other women can do so, old friends get placed next to those they wish to see, those arriving late have space, emergency space exists, and that the camp is otherwise laid out in a harmonious and efficient manner.

The people holding these positions may need to be available for Set-Up Week. They work closely with the Borg Liaison, Hospitality, Builder, and others to ensure a functional space. They assure incoming Villagers are greeted during the event to assure they set up in a designated spot. This person should ensure that other gracers are trained in all aspects of the position and have all the necessary information to assist, especially during event week.

HAMMER
CREW
Hammer Crew

These positions oversee the build-up and tear-down of all infrastructure needed for Anonymous Village to exist on playa each year.

The Hammer Crew works closely with other primary positions to solve issues related to budget, placement and other Village needs. Individuals on The Hammer Crew should ensure other members are trained in all aspects of the position and that they have all necessary information to step in if needed.

Members of The Hammer Crew may need to be available during our Set-Up Week.

MOOP
CREW
Moop Crew

These positions are responsible for ensuring that all AV participants are aware of their individual responsibilities to assure we leave no trace on the playa. They advise, educate and enact with regards to best practices to accomplish a no-trace village that receives a green score on the post-event Moop Map, which affects future village placement.

The Moop Crew enlists the help of Villagers to do moop sweeps, prepare informational signs, facilitate meeting announcements on playa, and solicit the assistance of others to carry trash off-playa.

This person should ensure that one alternate is trained in all aspects of the position and has all the necessary information to step in if needed. There is one alternate for this position.

Hospitality Crew

These positions ensure that adequate snacks and drinks are available on-playa 24/7.

The Hospitality Crew coordinates the pot-luck dinners, inform Villagers of opportunities to volunteer, coordinate with the Moop Czar to ensure trash is removed, oversee the set-up and break down of the Hospitality Yurt and Tent, ensure purchase of budgeted items for the event and transportation to the playa, inform others of opportunities to donate supplies, and otherwise help make sure that AV is a welcoming place.

This crew should ensure that other members are trained in all aspects of the position and has all the necessary information to step in if needed.

SOLAR
CREW
Solar Crew

These positions are responsible for setting up, maintenance and disassembly of the components of our solar power system.

The Solar Crew ensures that batteries are transported off-playa for off-season maintenance, the on-playa components are packed securely, all tools and equipment necessary for the installation are available, and the system is meeting the Village's needs.

These positions work closely with the Builder and Placement during setup week to have postholes dug, trenches dug, and other necessary steps taken to install the solar lighting system.
